Seasonic is missing here, the best psu manufacturer around imo. (they build the better Antec PSU's and others, next to it's own line of products)

Just resently bought a 800W PSU made by Gigabyte, which works great! Great finnish and modulized power plugs as well. The pricetag is somewhere around 100 Euro. Why haven't Anand yet had a look at those?
  • Christoph Katzer - Sunday, July 27, 2008 - link

Because Anand doesn't have time to review PSUs ;)

The Gigabyte Odin was reviewed quite some time ago:

    Aww... Didn't know that! :x

Thank you! :D Great review about the Gigabyte Odin power supply! Just the one I bought. Great Power Supply as well.

just bought one from JR, came DOA, but they're doing an Advanced Replacement for me. One thing I gotta, say, is this beast is huge! Hopefully I get a consistent power flow, because my last TT 700W PSU, (toughpower) I think sucked. Killed 3 MBs... but then again, i'm just speculating.
  • Alexstarfire - Wednesday, July 23, 2008 - link

Why are all these PSUs so expensive? I got my OCZ StealthXStream 600w PSU for $60, I believe. Not the highest build quality ever I'm sure, but it's got to be better than the $70 450w PSU in the "budget" section. It was on sale, but you can get it on Newegg for $79. Actually, it's $54 after MIR.
  • Noya - Wednesday, July 23, 2008 - link

OCZ have always seemed kind of cheap to me.

And for the $70 Corsair 450, it can be had regularly at buy.com for $49-55 after a Corsair rebate. At $70-75, you can get their 550vx or 650tx models. Hell, I've seen their 750tx for $89 w/rebate and google checkout. And they're always shipped free...BUY.com for the Corsair WIN!
  • Christoph Katzer - Wednesday, July 23, 2008 - link

Thanks, will keep this in mind for the next one.
  • masouth - Wednesday, July 23, 2008 - link

Why does it "got to be better"?

    ...because it's 600w?
    ...because it's OCZ?
    ...because it was cheap?

I'm not saying that it is or it isn't better because I haven't looked at any reviews of that ps however the only information you've included to back up that it's got to be better is the brand, watts, and the price.

All three of those can be very misleading without being tested.

Love mine, and they continue to get great rankings and reviews.

what the hippies 've to say abt the power efficient PSU's... :P
  • Wineohe - Monday, July 21, 2008 - link

Wow I waited months to pull the trigger and then virtually the next day you post a buyers guide. Anyway Newegg has the Antec Neopower 650 Blue marked down to $99 from $159. I think I did OK.
  • Noya - Wednesday, July 23, 2008 - link

Yeah, I think the Corsair 520/620 would be better:

Why do I never see the HYPER PS units the are very top end performance wise but are even pricewise and very very solid efficient units???

  • fnord123 - Monday, July 21, 2008 - link

The data that the articles shows in graphs is prices? Huh!?!?

Save the graph space for useful information please. How about graphs of:
12V,5V, 3.3V stability at different load levels
    Efficiency at different load levels
    Volume at different load levels
    Etc.

And please directly compare the units - i.e. I want to know which unit gives the highest efficiency @ each price point (or even a scatter chart of efficiency vs. cost.

This review as it stands was one of the weakest ones I've seen at AnandTech.
  • JarredWalton - Monday, July 21, 2008 - link

Almost every PSU in this list is linked to an article where we actually review the item in question, showing among other things voltage stability, efficiency, and noise levels. This is a Buyer's Guide, not a review, which is why all that other data isn't present.

I got a 750W Decathlon earlier this year and couldn't be happier. It's providing good, clean power to my new monster of a home PC. I paid 170USD at MicroCenter. :)
  • anartik - Monday, July 21, 2008 - link

I'd love to know where the price comparisons came from... don't seem even close to reality. The PC Power & Cooling 860 can't be found less than 269 at NE or 279 at TD. I want to buy one and would love to pay $215...

    http://www.google.com/products?q=turbo+cool+860W&a...">Google, FTW!

Obviously, prices change over time. Christoph wrote the text over a week ago, and there was a delay in my editing and posting. I didn't take the time to research every single price a second time, as that can be very tedious.
  • imaheadcase - Tuesday, July 22, 2008 - link

It could of also came from your price engine on website..oh wait its been broke for about a year. :P

    Power Supply Buyer's Guide?

looks more like paid placement recommended by anandtech to me. how much do you guys charge to have an item in these "buyer's guides"?

sure these are good psus, but there are many, many more that are just as good and not on the list. also, wasn't one of the recommended ocz units having an issue in one of your reviews w/ a multi-gpu setup? could have sworn it was a 800-1000W ocz unit that couldn't even put out less than 300-400W continuous, not even long enough for you guys to finish your test.
  • JarredWalton - Monday, July 21, 2008 - link

We charge as much as we charge for any other article: nothing. Send us the hardware, and we'll get a review done. Listing every potential part that is close to the same quality gets tedious, and it goes without saying that we haven't tested every part. Christoph has tested or is testing all of the PSUs mentioned here, so he's comfortable making recommendations. There are also quite a few PSUs he's tested which aren't on the list, for one reason or another.

The main reason for the article is to provide a broader overview of the PSU market. Many overlook this important component, and settle for cheap options that are inefficient and potentially unstable.
  • madgonad - Monday, July 21, 2008 - link

My brand new Corsair PS is delivering 11 volts on the +12V line, so I am just waiting around for an RMA from them. I keep forgetting that 'Made in China' is also a warning label...
  • rudolphna - Monday, July 21, 2008 - link

Kingwin ABT-450MM Stable, good power output, very quiet.
  • RobertAnderson - Monday, July 21, 2008 - link

I am surprised the Silverstone Decathlons didn't make it into the recommendations. It looked like a good quite power supply after the review showed it was quite and extremely stable.
  • RobertAnderson - Monday, July 21, 2008 - link

Sorry that was quiet. I just woke up.
  • Christoph Katzer - Monday, July 21, 2008 - link

    The 700W version is included.
  • RobertAnderson - Monday, July 21, 2008 - link

Wow, I don't know how I missed that.
  • SilthDraeth - Monday, July 21, 2008 - link

That Coolermaster PSU that was 85% Energystar Silver certified?

Or was it another brand, but I am sure it is Coolermaster.
  • Christoph Katzer - Monday, July 21, 2008 - link

You mean 80Plus Silver? That's the UCP series from which we will have a review this or next week up.
  • SilthDraeth - Monday, July 21, 2008 - link

That may be it. I thought the Silver meant it was 85% certified. Is their a reason it didn't make it on the buyer's guide? Or must I await the review?

    Thank you.
  • Christoph Katzer - Monday, July 21, 2008 - link

Yeah better wait for the review. It's a great product... no doubt... but high efficiency is not everything a high-end unit needs to bring to the table. ;)
  • JEDIYoda - Monday, July 21, 2008 - link

Exavtly correct Christopher. High efficiency is not everything!
In fact high efficiency does not anything to do with build quality or the longwvity of the PSU!!

Even JonnyGURU has stated that many many times!!

Is a high effiency PSU built better than a garden basement PSU? Most likely!!

    Peace!!
